Onion Planting Guide: Make Your Garden Tears

The common onion is a biennial bulb with hollow, tubular, blue-green leaves. A shallow network of roots extend from the bottom of the bulb, and the bulb might push partially above ground as the plant matures. In order to thrive, onions need lots of sunlight, well-draining soil, and nitrogen-rich fertilizer. Be careful, though: onions are toxic to pets, so be careful not to let them eat them! Sunny spots with loose soil and a neutral pH are best. Leave at least 6 inches between each plant, spacing onion rows about 1 foot apart to allow room for the maturing plants to spread. Onion seeds are usually started indoors approximately six weeks prior to the outdoor soil temperature being around 50 degrees Fahrenheit. If you're starting with seedlings, plant them outside when the soil temperature is around 50 degrees Fahrenheit as well.  It’s also possible to plant in the fall in warmer climates. The onions will stay dormant over the winter and then continue to grow in the spring. Selecting a Planting Site Choose a sunny spot with loose soil. Compacted or rocky soil will hinder bulb growth. Also, avoid planting where other Allium species have been in the past few years. Pests and diseases that target the plants can linger in the soil. Container growth is also an option if you don't have proper garden conditions. Spacing, Depth, and Support To plant onion sets, press them into the soil so just the top is visible. Space the sets roughly 4 inches apart, and space rows 12 to 18 inches apart. Once the sets are in the ground, leave them alone; do not hill soil up around them.  The sets are supposed to peek out of the ground at all times. Plant seeds only about 1/4 inch deep. And thin seedlings to around 4 inches apart also in rows that are 12 to 18 inches apart. A support structure generally won't be necessary. Onion Care Light Onions need full sun—at least six hours of direct sunlight per day—to grow properly. With onions, the more sunlight the better. Soil Proper soil is the key element to growing onions successfully. The soil needs to be extremely well-drained—even sandy—and it should have lots of organic matter. A loose loam will work well. Grows best in soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Water Onions need regular water to support the swelling of the bulbs. Give them 1 inch of water per week. But don't overwater or allow the bulbs to sit in soggy soil because this can lead to bulb rot. A light layer of mulch can help to retain soil moisture. Temperature and Humidity Onion seeds need temperatures of at least 40 degrees Fahrenheit to germinate. The optimal growing conditions for onions are between 68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Humidity typically isn’t an issue as long as soil moisture needs are met. Fertilizer Onions are fairly heavy feeders. Fertilize them every few weeks with a high-nitrogen fertilizer to support leaf growth, which will produce big bulbs. For the amount to use, follow the product label instructions. Once the soil begins to crack around where the bulb is forming, the foliage growing cycle is complete and no further application of fertilizer is required. Harvesting Onions The time required for the bulbs to mature depends on the variety and whether they were started from seeds or sets. But you can harvest onions at any stage; even seedlings thinned from a row can be used as green onions. Onion bulbs are fully mature when about half of the top leaves have collapsed and when the bulb skin has a papery feel. Bulbs allowed to remain in the ground until 50 percent or more of the green tops have collapsed will store longer. It’s best to harvest in dry weather. Once you see that half the leaves have collapsed, gently coax the remaining leaves down without breaking them off the bulb. Then, allow the bulb to sit in the ground and cure for a couple of days. Next, dig up the bulb, rather than pulling it. You don’t have to dig deep—just enough to loosen the remaining roots. Brush off any loose soil, and trim the leaves to about 1 to 2 inches from the bulb. Also, trim off the roots. You can use freshly harvested onions at any point, storing them in the refrigerator once they're cut. To store the rest of your harvest, set the onions outside in a warm, dry spot for a few days to cure. Then, hang them in a mesh bag in a cool, dry spot with good air circulation. The temperature should be roughly 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. However, don’t store them in a refrigerator as that environment is too humid. Check regularly for signs of rot, and remove any culprit before it can impact the other onions. How to Grow Onions in Pots If your garden soil is too dense or you don’t have the right light conditions, container growth can be a good option for onions. Choose a container that’s roughly a foot deep. You can plant multiple onions per container as long as they have about 6 inches of space on each side. It’s also essential that the pot has drainage holes. Unglazed clay is a good container material to allow excess soil moisture to evaporate through its walls. Pruning Onions generally don't require pruning. However, be sure to remove any damaged leaves promptly. If they're left to drag on the ground, they can introduce diseases or pests to the plant. Propagating Onions Besides growing from seeds and sets, you also can propagate an onion from scraps. This is a great way to stretch your harvest and get more out of what would’ve been waste. The best time to start this process is in the early spring. Here’s how: Cut roughly an inch off the bottom of a fresh onion, and remove the outer skin. Position the piece cut side up on a dry surface to dry out for a day. Place the bottom (root) side down in a container filled with moist soilless potting mix. Slightly cover the top with soil. Put the container in a warm spot with bright, indirect light. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. In about two weeks, you should start to see green leaves popping up through the soil. Roots will be developing at the same time. Once the leaves are several inches long and you feel resistance when you gently tug on them, you’ll know the roots have developed enough to be transplanted.  How to Grow Onions From Seed If planting onions from seeds, plant them indoors in trays filled with seed-starter mix at least six weeks, and as much as 12 weeks, before outdoor planting time. Place the tray under artificial grow lights for 10 to 12 hours each day. Keep the potting mix damp but not soggy. When outdoor temperatures are routinely above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, transplant the seedlings into the garden. Potting and Repotting Onions Use a quality organic vegetable potting mix with sharp drainage for potting onions. You can mix in some compost to improve the drainage and nutrient content. Furthermore, as it's best to choose a container that can accommodate the onions' mature size, repotting shouldn't be necessary during the growing season. Overwintering Because onions are typically grown as annuals, overwintering won't be necessary. If you're planting a fall crop in a warm climate, consider raised garden beds. They will help to keep the temperature more consistent for the dormant onions throughout the winter. Common Pests and Plant Diseases Pests and diseases that afflict other Allium species also can impact onions. They include: Rot: During wet conditions, onions can develop stem or bulb rot. Avoid rot by making sure there is good soil drainage and air circulation. Splitting: Bulbs can split if the soil is allowed to remain dry while the bulbs are forming. Thrips: These small, yellowish-brown flying insects feed on leaves and can cause twisting and curling. Repeated attacks cause the foliage to stop growing, so the onion bulbs don’t mature. Plant resistant varieties, and don’t plant onions near grain crops. Neem oil and insecticidal soaps can provide temporary control. Onion root maggots: Root maggot larvae hatch from eggs laid by brown flies near the base of onion plants. The maggots burrow into the stems, feeding on the plants below the soil and eventually killing the onions. Rotate plants to a different location each year to avoid infestation. Hey guys! Spring is here, so it’s time to grab your spade and get planting! Our spring planting calendar not only tells you the earliest you can start planting (based on the last spring frost), but also includes a “last planting date” in case you missed the initial planting window. Don’t be afraid, even if you’re a beginner, you can easily get started! In fact, many crops with short maturity times (such as radishes) can be succession planted all the way through the summer in northern areas. However, note that some cool-season crops, such as kale and lettuce, do not grow well in hot temperatures, which can cause bolting issues.  For some gardeners, especially in the South, a break to avoid summer heat is needed, but they can start once the heat has passed.  Specifically, on the charts, there are different columns labeled as follows: Start Seeds Indoors: Plant seeds indoors to get an early start on the growing season. Plant Seedlings Outdoors: Transplant seedlings you’ve grown indoors or purchased from a garden center into soil outdoors. Start Seeds Outdoors: Plant seeds directly in soil outdoors. Last Date to Plant: This is the latest time you can plant. After this date, the crop may not have time to mature before fall or winter frost. "Moon Dates" :These dates are recommended for optimal planting times based on the moon cycle.  “N/A”: If "N/A" appears in the table, it means that the method is not generally recommended, but it may still be successful. Why Do You Start Seeds Indoors? Starting seeds indoors (in seed trays or starter pots) gives your crops a head start on the growing season, which is especially important in regions with a short growing season. Starting seeds indoors also allows young, tender plants to grow in a stable, controlled environment. Outdoors, the unpredictability of rain, drought, frost, low and high temperatures, sunlight, pests, and diseases can take a toll on young plants, especially when they're just starting. Indoors, you can control these elements to maximize your plants' early growth and give them the best shot at thriving when they are transplanted outdoors.  For most crops that can be started indoors, seeds should be started about 6-8 weeks before your last spring frost date. Not all vegetables should be started indoors! In fact, most are better off being started directly in the garden (aka "direct-sown"). The crops that should be started indoors are particularly susceptible to cold temperatures or have a very long growing season and need a head start. These include tender vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant and crops with a long growing season, like broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts.  Most other crops do best when sown directly into the garden soil. Root crops, including carrots, radishes, and beets, are especially well-suited to being started directly in the garden since they do not like having their roots disturbed after planting. It's time to transplant when seedlings have grown too large for their seed trays or starter pots. If it's not yet warm enough to plant outdoors, transplant the seedlings to larger plastic or peat pots indoors and continue care. What Is Planting by the Moon? Planting by the Moon (also called "Gardening by the Moon") is a traditional way to plant your above- and below-ground crops, especially at the start of the season. Here's how it works: Plant annual flowers and vegetables that bear crops above ground during the light, or waxing, of the Moon. In other words, plant from the day the Moon is new until the day it is full. Plant flowering bulbs, biennial and perennial flowers, and vegetables that bear crops below ground during the dark, or waning, of the Moon. In other words, plant from the day after the Moon is full until the day before it is new again. The Importance of the Last Planting Date The last planting date is key to ensuring that crops mature before frost arrives. Missing this date may result in crops not fully maturing and affecting the harvest. Therefore, try to complete sowing by the last planting date even if you miss the initial planting window. Raised beds are very useful in the garden - they are attractive, easy to work with, easy to move around on wheels, and can double as a resting place.The soil where I was going to grow the tomatoes was poor and not suitable for the plants I wanted to grow, so I needed to prepare 4 raised beds full of gritty compost to solve this problem. Similarly, in raised beds you can add suitable compost to change the soil conditions, pH etc and grow a range of suitable plants making them ideal for sowing and growing vegetables, flowers.Raised beds can be made from a variety of materials including iron or wood panels and can be built as big, small, high or low as we need them to be. There are many important things to consider in order to make the most of them. Below is a collection of gardening tips we've put together in raised beds that we hope will be useful to you. Location The location of your raised bed will affect the plants you can grow in it. Consider how much sunlight the bed will receive and grow your plants accordingly. Most of our herbs, vegetables and annual flowers like full sun, especially tomatoes, so choose a raised bed location that receives about 8 hours of sunlight per day. The more sun the better. Many plants can grow in both sun and shade, but deeply shaded areas can limit your growth.If the light intensity isn't enough? Don't worry! There are many plants that thrive in partial shade, including arugula, parsley, lingonberries, fine parsnips and corydalis.Don't install raised beds in wet areas. Raised beds need to be well-drained so that your garden soil is not continually wet. Avoid those low-lying, wet areas on your grounds. Materials You can build raised beds from a variety of materials. Scaffold boards are one of the easiest and cheapest options, but they don't last as long as, for example, wooden sleepers. Find out more about the different timbers used for raised beds. Other materials used for raised beds include breeze blocks, sheet metal and gabions. Size and shape Avoid stepping on the soil in raised beds when weeding or harvesting, the maximum width is around 150cm. The depth of the scaffolding boards is suitable for growing vegetables. Leafy greens and herbs need at least 15cm of growing depth, while tomatoes, pumpkins and other deep-rooted crops need at least 40-50cm inches of nutrient-rich soil, but shrubs, perennials and bulbs need more depth, which needs to be designed separately.Beds do not have to be square or rectangular, but can be L-shaped or curved. In order to make it easier for me to care for and harvest tomatoes at a later stage, my raised beds are rectangular, with dimensions: 60cm(W) x 120cm(L) x 50cm(H), which can be given as a reference. Drainage If your raised beds are located on top of an existing boundary or lawn, there is no need to worry about drainage as excess water will seep away. If your beds are located on concrete or pavement, drainage should be added at the bottom in the form of gravel, stones or tiles.Unfortunately, my raised bed is located on a concrete floor and in finding the gravel for the pavers takes me a little longer . Composting For most plants, fill raised beds with a well-mixed combination of organic matter (i.e., decomposed manure), sand, and topsoil in a ratio of 3:2:7. If the beds are being used to grow plants that are water-phobic, a more gravelly mixture will be needed for additional drainage. Composting for tomatoes is covered in this article.Don't skimp on the soil! Quality, nutrient-rich soil is a must for any garden. Raised beds have an immediate advantage over underground gardens because when you fill a raised bed, you can fill it with a soil mix that is superior to the native soil in your yard. Familiarize yourself with some common soil and fertilizer terms and make any necessary modifications to soil texture, pH or drainage. Watering Raised beds dry out faster than topsoil in a garden, so be sure to keep them watered. Or, you can install a drip irrigation system as a low-maintenance alternative. Consider the proximity of your water source! Since your garden needs to be watered during the growing season, you'll need to have relatively easy access to a hose. Today, I've compiled a list of some of the various pests common to tomatoes that can affect plant health and reduce yields. Below is a list of common tomato pests, if you have new ideas or know how to better prevent and repel these pests, feel free to leave a comment and let us know.   These pests are varied and accompanied by pictures, so you won't be unfamiliar with them if you encounter them in your tomato garden! It's too early to get to know them, but I really can't wait to grow a yard full of tomatoes soon!   Aphids (Aphidoidea): Small, soft-bodied insects that feed on sap from the leaves, causing distortion and yellowing.Aphids can transmit plant viruses.   Whiteflies (Aleyrodidae): Tiny, white insects that feed on the undersides of leaves. They can cause yellowing, wilting, and the transmission of plant viruses.   Tomato Hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata): Large, green caterpillars with a horn-like protrusion on their rear end. Hornworms can defoliate plants rapidly.   Colorado Potato Beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata): Oval-shaped beetles with yellow and black stripes. Both larvae and adults feed on tomato foliage, causing significant damage.   Spider Mites (Tetranychidae): Tiny arachnids that suck sap from plant cells, leading to stippling and yellowing of leaves. They thrive in hot and dry conditions.   Flea Beetles (Chrysomelidae): Small, jumping beetles that chew tiny holes in leaves.Damage is more noticeable on young plants. Cutworms (Noctuidae family): Nocturnal caterpillars that cut through plant stems at soil level. They can cause seedlings to collapse.   Thrips (Thysanoptera): Slim, tiny insects that feed on leaves, causing silvering and distortion. Thrips can transmit viruses and affect fruit quality.   Leafminers (Agromyzidae): Larvae that tunnel through leaves, creating winding trails or "mines." While not always a major threat, heavy infestations can weaken plants.   Stink Bugs (Pentatomidae): Shield-shaped bugs that feed on fruit, causing damage and deformation. They can transmit pathogens.   Tomato Fruitworm (Helicoverpa zea):   Larvae feed on tomato fruit, causing damage and reducing yield. They are also known as corn earworms.   Wireworms (Elateridae): Larvae of click beetles that feed on plant roots and can damage young seedlings.   Snails and Slugs (Gastropoda): Mollusks that feed on young seedlings and fruit, leaving behind slime trails. Beer Traps for Slugs: Sink containers filled with beer into the soil to attract and drown slugs. Empty and refill the traps regularly. Floating Row Covers: Covering young plants with floating row covers can protect them from flying insects like flea beetles.
