Hey guys! Spring is here, so it’s time to grab your spade and get planting! Our spring planting calendar not only tells you the earliest you can start planting (based on the last spring frost), but also includes a “last planting date” in case you missed the initial planting window. Don’t be afraid, even if you’re a beginner, you can easily get started! In fact, many crops with short maturity times (such as radishes) can be succession planted all the way through the summer in northern areas. However, note that some cool-season crops, such as kale and lettuce, do not grow well in hot temperatures, which can cause bolting issues.  For some gardeners, especially in the South, a break to avoid summer heat is needed, but they can start once the heat has passed.  Specifically, on the charts, there are different columns labeled as follows: Start Seeds Indoors: Plant seeds indoors to get an early start on the growing season. Plant Seedlings Outdoors: Transplant seedlings you’ve grown indoors or purchased from a garden center into soil outdoors. Start Seeds Outdoors: Plant seeds directly in soil outdoors. Last Date to Plant: This is the latest time you can plant. After this date, the crop may not have time to mature before fall or winter frost. "Moon Dates" :These dates are recommended for optimal planting times based on the moon cycle.  “N/A”: If "N/A" appears in the table, it means that the method is not generally recommended, but it may still be successful. Frequently Asked Questions How Accurate Are the Planting Dates? Use this chart as a planning guide and a starting place. The frost dates are averages based on historical data; this is NOT a prediction for the coming year. While the majority of gardeners use frost dates as a guideline for planting, some locations in the U.S. do not have frost; in addition, some difficult areas simply don't match up perfectly with the dates provided. Growing in a "microclimate"(such as a low spot or side of a slope) will also affect your planting dates. Watch the weather, talk to fellow gardeners, and take notes on what works in your garden! Why Do You Start Seeds Indoors? Starting seeds indoors (in seed trays or starter pots) gives your crops a head start on the growing season, which is especially important in regions with a short growing season. Starting seeds indoors also allows young, tender plants to grow in a stable, controlled environment. Outdoors, the unpredictability of rain, drought, frost, low and high temperatures, sunlight, pests, and diseases can take a toll on young plants, especially when they're just starting. Indoors, you can control these elements to maximize your plants' early growth and give them the best shot at thriving when they are transplanted outdoors.  For most crops that can be started indoors, seeds should be started about 6-8 weeks before your last spring frost date. This gives the plants ample time to grow large and healthy enough to survive their eventual transplanting to the garden. Read more about starting seeds indoors here.  Which Seeds Should Be Started Indoors? Not all vegetables should be started indoors! In fact, most are better off being started directly in the garden (aka "direct-sown"). The crops that should be started indoors are particularly susceptible to cold temperatures or have a very long growing season and need a head start. These include tender vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant and crops with a long growing season, like broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts.  Most other crops do best when sown directly into the garden soil. Root crops, including carrots, radishes, and beets, are especially well-suited to being started directly in the garden since they do not like having their roots disturbed after planting. It's time to transplant when seedlings have grown too large for their seed trays or starter pots. If it's not yet warm enough to plant outdoors, transplant the seedlings to larger plastic or peat pots indoors and continue care. What Is Planting by the Moon? Planting by the Moon (also called "Gardening by the Moon") is a traditional way to plant your above- and below-ground crops, especially at the start of the season. Here's how it works: Plant annual flowers and vegetables that bear crops above ground during the light, or waxing, of the Moon. In other words, plant from the day the Moon is new until the day it is full. Plant flowering bulbs, biennial and perennial flowers, and vegetables that bear crops below ground during the dark, or waning, of the Moon. In other words, plant from the day after the Moon is full until the day before it is new again. The Importance of the Last Planting Date The last planting date is key to ensuring that crops mature before frost arrives. Missing this date may result in crops not fully maturing and affecting the harvest. Therefore, try to complete sowing by the last planting date even if you miss the initial planting window. Planning a 2025 vegetable garden is an exciting opportunity to be well prepared for the upcoming planting season. Thoughtful preparation is the key to successful planting. Whether you are an experienced gardener or a novice, the following suggestions will help you develop an efficient vegetable garden plan.  1. Review last year's garden Before creating a new plan, it is vital to review the past year's vegetable garden performance. Analyze which crops grew well and which encountered problems. Was there a pest or disease infestation? Were certain crops overplanted or underplanted? Record this information to adjust future planting strategies.Key Question: Has there been any pest or disease infestation? Are certain crops over- or under-grown? What are your favorite crops to grow or eat? 2. Set small goals for your garden in your mind  Clarifying your goals for your vegetable garden will help guide the entire planning process. Perhaps you'd like to reduce your grocery bill a bit, or you'd like to experiment with rare and unusual plant varieties, or you're even passionate about organic and sustainable gardening. Knowing these goals will not only help you decide what to plant, but will also make tending to this green space more manageable and fun.  3. Choose your vegetables wisely It's important to choose vegetables that suit your preferences and local climate conditions. Consider the following factors:  Personal preference: Choose a crop that you and your family like and use often, such as tomatoes, peppers or lettuce. Whether they are mass-planted in-ground, showcased in raised beds, or arranged as cut flowers within vases, tulips promise to enliven your growing space throughout the spring months.   Tulips exhibit remarkable variation, featuring single petals, ruffled fronds, or even lavish blooms akin to peonies, depending on the cultivar. Furthermore, their flowering times span from early through mid to late spring, contingent upon the specific variety, thereby ensuring an extended period of visual delight.   Regarding the optimal time for planting tulip bulbs, waiting until the first day of spring would likely prove tardy. As Ree Drummond humorously recounted, missing the fall planting window can lead to regrettable consequences. To avoid such pitfalls, it's essential to understand the precise timing and methods for planting tulips. When should I plant tulip bulbs? The strategic planting period for tulip bulbs necessitates a chilling duration of 10 to 14 weeks, which means that they should be sown in autumn to ensure blooming during the subsequent spring season. Optimal planting occurs during mid to late fall when nighttime temperatures consistently hover around 40°F for at least two weeks, provided the soil is not frozen solid. Given their cold-weather requirement, tulips thrive best in USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 7 (consult your zone here); gardeners in warmer climates must opt for pre-chilled and potted tulips to enjoy their floral display. How do I plant tulip bulbs? For successful planting, identify a location that receives full sunlight, roughly equivalent to six hours per day. Subsequently, excavate a hole approximately two to three times the bulb's height.
